The City of New Westminster is celebrating a major milestone in its efforts to grow a greener, healthier city. Phase 1 of the Urban Reforestation and Biodiversity Enhancement Initiative (URBEI) is now complete, and itβs exceeded expectations with over 2,300 trees planted across 40 parks and public spaces.
Thanks to $1.7 million in provincial and federal funding through the COVID-19 Resilience Infrastructure Program, this initiative is helping boost local biodiversity, cool urban areas, and fight climate change.
π± Why it matters:
Increases tree canopy cover citywide
Removes an estimated 4,050 tonnes of carbon pollution annually
Improves air quality and supports wildlife
Adds long-term shade and beauty to public spaces
The trees will be cared for with dedicated watering and irrigation support for the next three years, ensuring healthy growth and survival.
And thereβs more to come β Phase 2 kicks off later this year, intending to plant 6,000 additional trees on streets and boulevards by 2030.
