🛼 City Enforces Strict Lawn Watering Schedule Amid Water Conservation Efforts

As part of Stage 1 of the Water Shortage Response Plan, mandatory lawn watering regulations are now in effect citywide, running annually from May 1 through October 15. These guidelines apply regardless of weather conditions and are designed to reduce water demand and prevent waste during peak months.

Residential Watering Schedule:

  • Even-numbered addresses: Saturdays only

  • Odd-numbered addresses: Sundays only

  • Automatic watering: 5:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m.

  • Manual watering: 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.

Non-Residential Watering Schedule:

  • Even-numbered addresses: Mondays only

  • Odd-numbered addresses: Tuesdays only

  • Automatic watering: 4:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m.

  • Manual watering: 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.

Residents and businesses are encouraged to water during the early morning hours to minimize evaporation and ensure water system stability.

Additional Watering Rules:

  • Trees, shrubs, and flowers may be watered daily from early morning to mid-morning (5:00–9:00 a.m. for residential; 4:00–9:00 a.m. for non-residential) if using sprinklers. Hand watering and drip irrigation are permitted at any time.

  • All hoses must be equipped with automatic shut-off devices.

  • Edible plants such as fruits and vegetables are fully exempt from restrictions.

Understanding Watering Methods:

  • Automatic watering involves any timed or sensor-based irrigation system.

  • Manual watering refers to handheld methods such as hoses or watering cans.

A helpful guide, Lawn Watering: Automatic vs. Manual Methods, is available for residents seeking clarity on approved practices.

Permit Information:

Special watering permits are available for new sod or seeded lawns, and for lawns treated with Nematodes. Permits allow for additional watering days but still require watering to occur only during the approved time windows. Permits can be obtained in person at City Hall, the Queensborough Community Centre, or online. Proof of purchase may be required.

Please note: No new permits will be issued for new lawns if Stage 2 or higher of the plan is enacted.

Additional Notes:

  • Hand-watering of flowers, shrubs, and vegetable gardens is not restricted.

  • Washing vehicles with a hose fitted with a spring-loaded shut-off nozzle is permitted.

  • Rain barrel water may be used for lawn watering outside of regulated hours.

To report violations, contact Parking Services at 604-519-2010 or email [email protected]. Be ready to provide the address, time, date, and location of the observed infraction.

By adhering to these regulations, residents can help conserve water and prevent the need for stricter measures later in the season.
