New Westminster's PechaKucha community is marking a major milestone with its 40th PechaKucha Night, coming to a new location in Queen's Park on September 5.

The evening will take place at Centennial Lodge, where a diverse lineup of speakers will share their stories, ideas and perspectives in PechaKucha's signature fast-paced format.

Each presenter will showcase 20 slides for 20 seconds each, creating a lively evening designed to keep audiences engaged while introducing them to new ideas and local voices.

Organizers are inviting both longtime PechaKucha fans and newcomers to join the celebration, connect with the community and discover something unexpected.

PechaKucha Night Vol. 40 takes place September 5 at Centennial Lodge in Queen's Park.

Registration is available online through PechaKucha New West.

With students across New Westminster getting ready to head back to school, artificial intelligence is becoming another tool families may need to navigate.

OpenAI has launched a version of ChatGPT designed specifically for teenagers ages 13 to 17, with additional safeguards intended to make the experience more age-appropriate.

The teen-focused version includes stronger protections around sensitive topics such as suicide, self-harm and sexual or romantic content. OpenAI says it is also designed to support students with homework and studying without simply doing the work for them.

That could make AI an increasingly common part of a student's study routine — but it also gives parents another reason to talk with their teens about how to use the technology responsibly.

For New Westminster families, that conversation could include when AI is helpful, how to check whether an AI-generated answer is accurate, why students shouldn't rely on it to complete assignments, and what personal information they should avoid sharing.

OpenAI's move also comes amid broader questions about privacy and how companies collect and use information from AI users, making digital literacy an important part of navigating the technology.

AI isn't going away from the classroom or everyday life. For parents and students, the challenge may be learning how to make it a useful tool without allowing it to replace critical thinking, creativity and human connection.
