![]() | New Westminster has seen a significant drop in crime severity, reaching its lowest level since 2018. According to Statistics Canada’s 2024 Crime Severity Index (CSI), the city’s overall CSI fell by 16.9%. Violent crime severity dropped by 23.3%, while non-violent crime declined by 14.1%. The CSI measures the seriousness and volume of police-reported crimes. It does not include non-criminal incidents like traffic issues, mental health calls, or missing persons. |
In 2024, New Westminster reported no homicides and saw fewer serious assaults, robberies, and property crimes—encouraging signs of progress. Still, police emphasize that feeling safe goes beyond the numbers.
To support ongoing efforts, the New Westminster Police Department received $500,000 in provincial funding through the Specialized Investigation and Targeted Enforcement (SITE) and Community Safety and Targeted Enforcement (C-Step) programs. These funds help tackle repeat and serious crime, particularly in the downtown core.
Currently, New Westminster’s CSI stands at 79.5—better than B.C.’s average of 92.98 but slightly higher than Canada’s national average of 77.98. Police continue to invest in proactive patrols and community engagement, aiming to make residents feel just as safe as the stats suggest.
