New Westminster City Council is preparing to vote on a $419,000 pilot project aimed at revitalizing Westminster Pier Park following extensive vandalism that left the waterfront site damaged and underused.

The damage—totaling $458,000 over the past year—has affected public bathrooms, elevators, and the children’s playground, leaving parts of the park unsafe and inaccessible for families. The issues stem in part from a prolonged development project that cut off sections of the park from the main riverfront esplanade, resulting in a drop in foot traffic and an increase in inappropriate activity, particularly after dark.

The proposed revitalization effort would increase city staff presence at the park, including newly hired park liaison officers and private security. The focus is to deter vandalism and other disruptive behaviour while restoring the park's image as a safe, family-friendly destination.

The council is also considering additional maintenance funding to improve cleanliness and invest in community events designed to attract more visitors. The plan includes $30,000 for increased cleaning services and $71,000 to host festivals and activities throughout the summer.

Last month saw the reopening of the riverfront esplanade connecting River Market to the west side of the park. Officials hope that reopening the entire site by the end of the summer, coupled with this pilot project, will help restore Pier Park’s reputation as the heart of the city’s downtown waterfront.

The project would be funded by reallocating money from existing city budgets.

Don’t Trash It—Recycle It!

Hey neighbors! Got a pile of stuff you can’t toss in the blue bin? Don’t let it sit around collecting dust—New Westminster is hosting a special recycling pop-up this Saturday, July 12, and it’s the perfect time to clear it all out!

📍 Where? Engineering Operations Works Yard – 901 1st Street
🕙 When? 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM
💰 Cost? Totally FREE!

This isn’t your average recycling day. You can bring in items that usually don’t go curbside—think old books, Styrofoam, worn-out clothes, even that toaster that finally gave out on you. Just drop them off and let the city's Solid Waste and Recycling Team take it from there.

✔️ What You Can Bring:

  • 📚 Soft & hardcover books

  • 🛍️ Soft plastics (like plastic bags and wrap)

  • 🧊 Styrofoam

  • 👚 Textiles & clothing

  • ☕ Small household appliances (toasters, coffee makers, etc.)

  • 🔩 Small scrap metals (pots, pans, broken tools)

 What Not to Bring:
No large appliances, no big electronics, no glass, no garbage, and no recyclables that aren’t listed above. When in doubt, check the Recycle Coach app to find the right drop-off spot.

And don’t worry if you’ve got questions—there’ll be friendly recycling pros on site to help you sort things out and learn how to recycle smarter. It’s all about keeping our community clean and green🌱.

So grab those dusty items, swing by on Saturday, and let’s make a difference—one item at a time!
