Looking for a fun and active way to spend your Sunday? Play Day New Westminster is back on April 19 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., turning Queenโ€™s Park Arena and Sportplex into a hub of movement, play, and community connection.

This free, drop-in event invites families and kids to explore a wide range of sports and activities โ€” from ball hockey and basketball to ringette, circus skills, and more. Itโ€™s the perfect chance to try something new, build confidence, and discover local programs available in the community.

Play Day is all about encouraging physical literacy, helping children develop the skills, confidence, and motivation to stay active for life โ€” all while having fun.

Presented by Play New West, a partnership between local organizations including the City, schools, Fraser Health, and community groups, the event highlights the importance of staying active and connected

New Westminsterโ€™s 2026 municipal election is starting to take shape, with candidates stepping forward ahead of the October 17 vote.

On March 31, Mayor Patrick Johnstone announced he will seek re-election as the Community First New Westminster candidate. Johnstone was first elected mayor in 2022 after serving multiple terms on city council.

He joins Coun. Daniel Fontaine, who previously confirmed he will run for mayor under the New Westminster Progressives (NWP).

Both civic groups are also organizing their broader slates. The New Westminster Progressives have already announced a full list of council candidates, including incumbents and newcomers. Community First is expected to finalize its candidates for council and school board at a May 3 nomination meeting.

On the school board side, both groups have also begun identifying candidates, with several current trustees aligned with Community First and additional candidates announced by the New Westminster Progressives.

More candidates โ€” including potential independents โ€” may enter the race in the months ahead.

As the election approaches, residents can expect further announcements as parties and candidates outline their priorities for the city.
