👮 Police Urge Caution for Online Marketplace Transactions During Holidays

As holiday shopping activity increases, the New Westminster Police Department is reminding residents to take extra precautions when buying or selling items through online marketplaces. The reminder follows a recent robbery involving jewelry that occurred during an in-person transaction arranged online.

While most online marketplace exchanges take place without incident, police note that meetings involving valuable items can carry added risks. Officers are encouraging buyers and sellers to plan transactions carefully and prioritize personal safety.

Police recommend meeting in public, well-lit locations where other people are present, ideally in areas monitored by CCTV. Buyers and sellers are also urged to verify the legitimacy of the person they are meeting, including reviewing buyer or seller ratings when available.

Additional safety tips include not attending meetings alone, being cautious when handling high-value items, and ensuring payment is received before handing over goods. Electronic transfers or limited cash exchanges are recommended, and residents are reminded to trust their instincts and cancel a meeting if something feels off.

Police advise against confronting anyone if a transaction goes wrong. Anyone who experiences a theft or robbery connected to an online marketplace transaction is encouraged to contact police immediately.

❄️🎉 Winter Break Celebration Kicks Off the Holidays in New West

Families looking to start the holiday season on a joyful note are invited to attend the Winter Break Celebration on Friday, December 19, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the təməsew̓txʷ Aquatic and Community Centre. Hosted by the City of New Westminster, this all-ages event is designed to bring the community together as winter break officially begins.

The evening will feature a variety of festive crafts, carols, toys, and interactive activities, creating a cheerful and welcoming environment for children and caregivers alike. A special holiday guest will also join the celebration, offering families the opportunity to capture a memorable seasonal photo.

Children between the ages of 2 and 10 must be registered in advance to participate, with a $2 registration fee per child (Program ID 234832). The affordable cost makes it an accessible option for families looking to enjoy local holiday programming without traveling far.

With its mix of creativity, music, and seasonal fun, the Winter Break Celebration offers a perfect way to kick off the holidays and enjoy time together as a community.
