New Westminster drivers should plan ahead for significant road closures this Saturday, Aug. 15, as Columbia Street and several surrounding streets make way for the New West Pride Street Festival.

From 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., full closures will be in effect on Columbia Street between Fourth and Eighth streets, as well as Begbie, Mackenzie and Sixth streets between Clarkson and Front streets. Church Street will also be closed.

The closures will affect access through a busy section of downtown during the festival, which runs from 3 to 8 p.m. on Columbia Street. Residents, visitors, businesses, and anyone travelling through the area are encouraged to plan their routes in advance and allow extra time for their journeys.

If you're heading downtown for Pride, consider using public transit, walking, or cycling where practical, and follow posted detour signs and directions from traffic control personnel.

The closures will remain in place for several hours after the festival ends to allow crews to safely clear the event area.

Plan ahead, travel safely, and get ready to celebrate Pride in the heart of New West!

Ready to slow down, get creative, and paint something beautiful? Arts New West member Julie Epp is inviting local artists and curious beginners to explore botanical illustration through her Everyday Watercolour Workshop: Botanical Studies on Wednesday, Aug. 19.

Taking place from 6 to 9 p.m. at Wildfires Bookshop, the three-hour workshop will introduce participants to the expressive side of botanical watercolour, focusing on loose, natural techniques rather than rigid realism.

Whether you're already comfortable with a paintbrush or simply looking for a creative evening, the workshop offers a chance to explore colour, shape, texture, and the beauty of plants in a relaxed setting.

The $75 registration fee includes all supplies, so participants can simply show up ready to create.

The workshop is part of Epp's Everyday Watercolour series and offers a hands-on opportunity to learn while connecting with New Westminster's local arts community.
