Elder abuse continues to be a growing yet often overlooked issue in New Westminster, affecting some of the most vulnerable members of the community. Often taking place behind closed doors, abuse can go unnoticed, especially when older adults are socially isolated or reluctant to speak out.
This troubling reality includes a range of harmful behaviors, from physical and emotional harm to financial exploitation, sexual abuse, and neglect. It's estimated that approximately 10 percent of older adults will experience abuse at some point, yet many cases remain unreported due to fear, shame, or a lack of support systems.
Social isolation is among the top risk factors, making it crucial for friends, family members, and neighbors to check in on elderly individuals and remain alert to warning signs. These signs may include unusual behavior, such as someone yelling at an older adult in public, unexplained bank withdrawals, damaged personal items, or missing belongings.
To address this issue, the New Westminster Police Department (NWPD) partners with community organizations, including senior services and professional counselors. As part of the New Westminster Community Response Network, the department plays an active role in prevention, education, and investigation. Specially trained detectives and a dedicated Victim Service Worker are available to assist anyone concerned about the well-being of an older adult.
Community members are encouraged to trust their instincts and speak up if something doesnโt seem right. Those in immediate danger should call 9-1-1, while non-emergency concerns can be directed to Fraser Health or the NWPDโs non-emergency line at 604-525-5411.
Learn how to spot the signs of elder abuse and what you can do โ visit Fraser Health for resources and support.
Calling all cyclists and summer night dreamers! ๐๐ดโโ๏ธ Mark your calendars for Saturday, July 26, because HUB Cycling is hosting an unforgettable group ride from New Westminster to Vanier Park โ all to catch the spectacular Honda Celebration of Light fireworks show.
This isnโt just a ride; itโs an experience. Imagine pedaling with friends (and new faces) along some of Metro Vancouverโs most scenic bike routes, with the city skyline unfolding as the sun dips low. The destination? Vanier Park, where the night sky will burst with colour as Nova Scotia lights up the competition.
Hereโs how it rolls:
๐ Meet-up Spot: Century House (620 Eighth Street, New Westminster)
๐ก Arrival: 6:30 PM
๐ด Departure: 6:45 PM sharp
๐ Distance: Approx. 50 km round trip
โฑ๏ธ Duration: ~6 hours (includes 2 hours at the park and scenic stops)
โก Pace: 10โ15 km/h โ no one gets left behind!
๐ Bike Type: Human-powered and e-bikes welcome!
The group will travel along safe, well-known cycling routes including the Central Valley Greenway, Ontario Bikeway, and Ridgeway Bikeway โ making it both enjoyable and accessible. Whether youโre a seasoned cyclist or just getting your wheels turning, this ride is for everyone.
๐ณ Want to start from Vancouver instead?
Youโre welcome to join the ride at John Hendry Park (next to Trout Lake) between 8:10 PM and 8:25 PM. Just text Fulton at 236-591-5267 ahead of time to confirm.
๐ After the fireworks show, expect to ride among bustling crowds. The group will reunite at Cypress Street & West 10th Avenue before heading back to New West. For a smoother path, take Maple Street south to reconnect with the group.
๐จ Safety First:
All participants must wear a helmet, ensure their bike is in good working condition, and have working front and rear lights for the ride home. Donโt forget to review and agree to HUB Cyclingโs waiver when registering!
Got questions? ๐ฒ Text Fulton at 236-591-5267 for more details.
