Drivers and residents in parts of New Westminster should plan ahead as several roads will be closed for Recovery Day BC on Saturday, September 12.
Starting at 7 a.m. on September 12 and continuing until 10 p.m., full closures will be in effect on:
Sixth Street from Seventh Avenue to Fourth Avenue
Sixth Avenue from Seventh Street to Fifth Street
Fifth Avenue from Fifth Street to Sixth Street
The City says no vehicle traffic, including residents, will be permitted through the full-closure areas.
Several nearby streets will remain local access only, with resident vehicles allowed through checkpoints when it is safe to enter or exit. A designated taxi pickup and drop-off area will also be available on Seventh Avenue near Sixth Street.
There will also be an earlier traffic change. From 7 p.m. on September 11 until 7 a.m. September 12, Sixth Street between Sixth Avenue and Seventh Avenue will have single-lane alternating traffic to accommodate event setup.
Residents and drivers are encouraged to plan alternate routes and allow extra travel time.
New Westminster will once again come together to honour the remarkable legacy of Terry Fox at the 46th annual Terry Fox Run on Sunday, September 20, 2026.
The community event will follow the scenic riverside boardwalk and continue through Pier Park, giving participants a chance to walk, run or wheel while supporting the ongoing fight against cancer.
Registration begins at 9 a.m. at River Market Food Hall, with the Walk/Run/Wheel starting at 10 a.m. There is no entry fee, and donations to the Terry Fox Foundation are encouraged to support cancer research.
This is a day for the whole community. Families, friends and even dogs on leashes are welcome to take part, enjoy free food and drinks, and share in a meaningful morning by the river.
More than just a run, the event is an opportunity to remember Terry Fox’s determination and the hope behind his Marathon of Hope. Each step helps carry that legacy forward and reminds us of what a community can accomplish when it comes together.
Pre-registration is available through terryfox.org, or participants can register on site.
Join the community on Sunday, September 20, at River Market Food Hall, 810 Quayside Drive. Registration starts at 9 a.m., with the run beginning at 10 a.m.
