Spotted a recycling star sticker in your neighbourhood? It may mean New Westminster’s Environmental Ambassadors have been nearby, helping residents sharpen their recycling habits this summer.

As part of the City’s residential recycling cart audit program, ambassadors are visiting homes to provide personalized guidance on what belongs in blue recycling carts—and what needs to go elsewhere. When residents aren’t home, an “Oops!” sticker may be left on a cart to identify incorrectly sorted items.

The education campaign comes as New Westminster works to lower its 10.95% recycling contamination rate, more than double Recycle BC’s 5% maximum target. High contamination can prevent otherwise recyclable materials from being successfully processed and could expose the City to significant financial penalties.

Repeated contamination can eventually result in rejected collection, bylaw notices, or fines.

Residents with sorting questions can use the Recycle Coach App, which features a “what goes where” search tool, recycling tips, and personalized collection reminders.

New Westminster Police are setting clearer ground rules for conversations on their social media channels, encouraging residents to keep comments respectful, relevant, and constructive.

Under the department’s Social Media Participant Use Policy, residents are welcome to ask questions, comment on posts, and share NWPD information with the community. However, comments containing hateful, threatening, obscene, inflammatory, defamatory, or bullying content may be removed.

NWPD may also delete off-topic posts, misinformation about department services or staff, advertisements, election campaigning, encouragement of illegal activity, copyright-infringing material, and repetitive comments on matters already addressed.

Users who repeatedly violate the guidelines may be blocked without warning. NWPD may also restrict comments when discussions become unproductive or when necessary to protect staff from harassment.

Residents wishing to provide formal feedback on policing decisions or policies are encouraged to contact the New Westminster Police Board rather than relying on social media comments.
