As fuel prices climb across Metro Vancouver, the impact is being felt close to home — including right here in New Westminster.
The B.C. General Employees’ Union (BCGEU) is urging the provincial government to expand work-from-home options for employees who can do their jobs remotely. The call comes as rising fuel costs — driven in part by conflict in the Middle East — continue to drive up daily expenses, especially for commuters.
For many New West residents who rely on driving to work or connecting through regional routes, higher gas prices are adding pressure to already tight household budgets. With fuel sitting above $2 per litre, commuting costs are quickly stacking up.
The union says allowing more people to work remotely could help ease transportation costs and reduce the financial strain on workers. While remote work became widespread during the pandemic, many workplaces have since shifted back to in-person requirements.
At the same time, the union acknowledges that not all workers can do their jobs from home, and is calling for broader solutions to support those still facing rising costs.
With affordability continuing to be a key concern across New Westminster, the conversation around flexible work options and cost relief is gaining renewed attention.
Cycling season is here, and Cap’s Bicycle Shop in New Westminster is inviting riders to kick things off at their upcoming Bike Club Open House on Thursday, April 16 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
This casual and welcoming event is designed to introduce riders to the Cap’s Bike Club, with a chance to meet ride leaders and ambassadors, learn about upcoming rides, and connect with fellow cycling enthusiasts.
Guests can enjoy pizza from Papa Leo’s, check out exclusive in-store deals on cycling gear like apparel, shoes, nutrition, and tires, and enter to win door prizes.
Whether you’re new to cycling or looking to get more involved in the local riding community, it’s a great way to start the season.
⚠️ Space is limited to 35 guests, so early RSVP is recommended.
