👮‍♀️ Drone Deployed After Report of Man With Replica Gun in West End

New Westminster Police responded to a 9-1-1 call on February 10 reporting a man carrying what appeared to be a long gun while trying door handles at homes in the West End.

As officers established containment in the area, a man matching the suspect’s description exited a nearby residence and was taken into custody without incident. During the response, police deployed a drone to conduct an interior check of the residence before entering, ensuring it was safe for officers.

The item in question was later confirmed to be an airsoft rifle.

“Replica firearms can cause significant fear in the community and prompt a large police response,” said Sgt. Andrew Leaver. “In this instance it was helpful to deploy our drone to provide our officers with situational awareness and ensure everyone’s safety.”

After speaking with the individual, police say no charges are being recommended. Officers remind the public that replica firearms are treated as real until proven otherwise.

🚧 Major Safety Upgrades Planned for East Sixth Avenue Through 2026 🏗️ 

Traffic safety upgrades are set to begin along East Sixth Avenue in New Westminster, with construction running from February 17 through August 2026. The improvements will span the corridor between Cumberland Street and McBride Boulevard and are aimed at enhancing safety and accessibility for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists.

A key feature of the project includes the installation of a new traffic signal at Cumberland Street. Additional upgrades will focus on improving overall road safety and making the area more accessible for all users.

Construction activity will typically occur between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m., with Saturday work potentially extending until 6 p.m. Drivers traveling through the area should prepare for periodic lane reductions, lane shifts, and possible delays throughout the project timeline.

Access to təməsew̓txʷ Aquatic and Community Centre will remain open during construction. However, temporary disruptions or short-term closures may occasionally occur. Visitors attending programs or lessons are encouraged to allow extra travel time.
