The City of New Westminster has every reason to celebrate as the təməsew̓txʷ Aquatic and Community Centre continues to earn acclaim—most recently taking home three major awards that highlight its excellence in design, sustainability, and community leadership.

A Community Treasure, Recognized

Though təməsew̓txʷ has already become a beloved fixture in the city, these latest accolades reaffirm what so many community members already know: this facility is something truly special. The BC Recreation and Parks Association (BCRPA) recently honoured təməsew̓txʷ with its Facility Excellence Award (over $6 million category), a distinction reserved for public spaces that go above and beyond to reflect community values. With its inclusive, accessible, and eco-conscious design, təməsew̓txʷ continues to stand out as a place where everyone feels welcome.

A Champion of Sustainability and Innovation

The centre also received two prestigious awards from the Recreational Facilities Association of British Columbia (RFABC):

  • The Polar Engineering Climate Action Award for leading the way in sustainable design and significantly reducing environmental impact.

  • The Bill Woycik Outstanding Facility Award for addressing community needs with innovation, operational excellence, and a deep commitment to environmental responsibility.

These awards are a testament to the forward-thinking vision behind təməsew̓txʷ, and to New Westminster’s leadership in building a greener, more inclusive future.

A Facility Built With Purpose—and Heart

At over 10,000 square metres and a $114 million investment, təməsew̓txʷ stands as New Westminster’s largest-ever capital project and a proud symbol of civic progress. It’s also a national trailblazer: the first completed all-electric facility in Canada certified under the Canada Green Building Council’s Zero Carbon Building – Design Standard.

With a Gold rating from the Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Certification—and an impressive 84% score—the centre continues to set a high bar for inclusivity, sustainability, and innovation.

Honouring Indigenous Culture and Community Connection

More than just a building, təməsew̓txʷ is a place rooted in meaning. Its name—təməsew̓txʷ, or “Sea Otter House”—is drawn from the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ language, honouring Indigenous heritage, identity, and connection to the land. Designed by hcma architecture + design and officially opened in 2024, the centre reflects the community’s deep respect for culture, history, and place.

A Global Role Model

In addition to these local honours, təməsew̓txʷ has received international acclaim, including the Prix Versailles 2024 World Title—a rare and prestigious recognition that places it among the world’s most outstanding public facilities.

A Lasting Legacy

təməsew̓txʷ Aquatic and Community Centre is more than a facility, it’s a vibrant gathering place, a bold vision brought to life, and a source of enduring pride for New Westminster and British Columbia. Its continued recognition is a reflection of the values it represents: inclusion, sustainability, and community spirit.

With every award and accolade, təməsew̓txʷ reminds us what’s possible when we build not just for today, but for generations to come.
