Starting at 9:00 p.m. on Friday, May 16, the Pattullo Bridge will be fully closed in both directions until 5:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 20. The closure is necessary to allow Fraser Crossing Partners to carry out essential drainage installation and foundation work for the new bridge approaches on both the New Westminster and Surrey sides.
Crews will be conducting excavation activities across the roadways, completely blocking vehicle access. Construction equipment will occupy the bridge lanes throughout the work period, making it inaccessible to motor vehicles.
Drivers are advised to use alternate routes, including the Port Mann or Alex Fraser bridges, during the closure. Public transit users should also expect changes, as northbound and southbound N19 NightBus services will be rerouted via the Queensborough and Alex Fraser bridges. Riders are encouraged to plan for an additional 30 minutes of travel time.
While vehicle access will be restricted, the bridge will remain open to pedestrians and cyclists throughout the construction period.
New Westminster Police Departmentโs Chief Paul Hyland has been awarded the prestigious Order of Merit of the Police Forces, recognizing his exceptional contributions and dedicated service over nearly three decades.
Established in 2000, the Order of Merit of the Police Forces honours police members across Canada whose achievements extend beyond traditional community protection. It recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding leadership, professionalism, and long-term commitment. The Order includes three levels of distinctionโCommander, Officer, and Memberโeach symbolizing exceptional service.
Chief Hyland began his career with the New Westminster Police Department in November 1995. Over the years, he held various roles including Patrol, Street Crime Unit, Emergency Response Team, and Major Crime Unit. His leadership journey began with his promotion to sergeant in 2007, followed by advancement to staff sergeant in 2008, where he took on responsibilities in Human Resources, Recruiting, Staff Development, and Strategic Communications.
In 2014, Hyland was promoted to inspector, overseeing Patrol Operations, Support Services, and Administration. He stepped into the Deputy Chief role in 2019 and was officially confirmed in 2020. In January 2025, he was appointed as Chief Constable.
Hylandโs career is marked by numerous commendations, including the BC Award of Valor for his role in safely apprehending an armed suspect in 2003. He holds a Bachelorโs Degree in Criminal Justice Studies and has completed executive leadership training at the Smith School of Business at Queenโs University.
The recent national recognition highlights a career defined by integrity, courage, and an unwavering dedication to the safety and well-being of the community.
