Road work is now underway on Princess Street in New Westminster, with construction scheduled to continue through October.

Crews are carrying out safety improvements along Princess Street between Sixth Street and Eighth Street. The project includes a new raised crosswalk, updated signage, and repairs and repaving of the roadway.

During construction, traffic will be restricted to one-way travel from Eighth Street toward Sixth Street. Temporary lane closures and closures affecting entrances to Royal City Centre are also expected.

Traffic control personnel and temporary signage will be in place throughout the work. Drivers should expect delays and allow extra time when travelling through the area.

The City is encouraging motorists to use alternate routes where possible while the work continues. Construction updates and additional information are available at newwestcity.ca/roadworks.

New Westminster residents can learn how to transform pre-loved clothing into one-of-a-kind textiles during a free eco-printing workshop at Centennial Lodge in Queen's Park on Wednesday, August 26.

Led by artist Fernanda Mascarenhas, “Upcycle your Clothes: Eco-printing with Plants” introduces participants to the natural dyeing technique of transferring colours and organic patterns from leaves, flowers, seeds and bark directly onto fabric.

The hands-on workshop will explore how different dye plants work, the role of mordants in helping colours stay on fabric, and which fabrics are best suited to natural dyeing. Participants will also experiment with plants gathered from the streets, highlighting the often-overlooked natural resources found throughout an urban environment.

No previous experience is required. Participants are asked to bring a light-coloured, pre-loved garment—preferably white—made from cotton, linen, rayon or silk. They can also bring plants they would like to experiment with. All other materials will be supplied, including a Botanical Contact Printing booklet containing recipes.

The workshop runs from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Centennial Lodge and is free through support from the Neighbourhood Small Grants program.

The workshop is an opportunity to slow down, reconnect with nature and turn an existing piece of clothing into something new.
