New Westminster Police Department officer sprang into action Saturday afternoon after spotting a fire on the top floor of an apartment building along Columbia Street near Begbie. The staff sergeant, who happened to be driving nearby, quickly responded to the scene and helped guide an elderly resident to safety, demonstrating quick thinking and bravery.
In addition to assisting with the evacuation, police officers also supported emergency efforts by managing traffic, allowing New Westminster Fire and Rescue Services to respond effectively to the blaze.
BC Emergency Health Services arrived around 3 p.m. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and no one required treatment or hospital transport. The incident, though alarming, ended without casualties thanks to the coordinated efforts of first responders.
Online, residents reacted with a strong sense of community spirit. Many shared the news to ensure others were informed, expressing appreciation for the emergency personnel and their rapid response. While relieved the fire was put out quickly, commenters emphasized caution, noting that it was still too early for celebration without knowing the full extent of the situation. The shared concern and support reflected the heart of a closely connected community.
