If you’ve been following the ongoing construction on Sixth Avenue, there’s a new update.
The City of New Westminster has confirmed that the closure between 18th Street and 20th Street will now remain in place until the end of May, extending the previous timeline.
The additional time is needed as crews continue underground infrastructure work, including complex utility connections near Stewardson Way. Final paving is still to come and will depend on weather conditions, followed by site clean-up to fully reopen the area.
For residents and commuters, this means continued detours and delays in the Uptown area for a few more weeks.
While the timeline has shifted, the City says the work is necessary to complete key infrastructure upgrades and ensure the road reopens safely.
🌍💚 Earth Day in New West: A City That Cares, Together
Today is Earth Day, and here in New Westminster, it is more than a date on the calendar. It is a feeling you can see in the way this community shows up.
From the Fraser River to our neighbourhood parks, there is a shared understanding that this place we call home is worth caring for. Whether it is a morning walk along the water, tending to a community garden, or choosing to support local, these small everyday moments are what shape a greener New West.
At New West Spotlight, we are proud to be part of a community that continues to show up for the environment in meaningful ways, not just today, but every day.
There is something special about living in a city where nature and community are so closely connected. Earth Day is a chance to pause and appreciate that, and to remember that protecting it is something we all play a part in.
Across New Westminster, people are taking action in their own ways:
Choosing more sustainable habits
Caring for green spaces and waterways
Starting conversations that inspire change
And the best part is that it does not take much to make a difference.
A small act like picking up litter, planting something new, or walking instead of driving can ripple outward in ways we do not always see. That is how change grows. That is how a community moves forward.
Because in New West, caring for the environment is not just something we do today. It is part of who we are, and the kind of future we are building together.
