Something strange is happening along the Fraser River, and curious explorers are invited to uncover the mystery! The Fraser River Discovery Centre is bringing back its spooky-themed Super Weekend, where visitors can investigate unusual animal behaviours, bizarre adaptations and nature’s strangest survival tricks.

From salmon that transform during spawning to glowing animal eyes, bats navigating in the dark and even plants that eat insects, this hands-on experience explores the science behind some of the river’s most fascinating natural phenomena.

Visitors can put their detective skills to work, gather clues and complete a field guide to discover why these unusual adaptations help Fraser River species find food, avoid predators and survive changing conditions.

The event also features two facilitated activities: Owl CSI, where participants examine owl pellets, and an Echolocation Investigation exploring how bats navigate without relying on sight.

Super Weekend takes place at the Fraser River Discovery Centre, located at 788 Quayside Drive in New Westminster, on October 24, 25 and 31, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Whether you’re fascinated by wildlife, curious about science or looking for a fun seasonal outing, this mysterious river adventure offers a chance to explore nature from a whole new perspective.

New Westminster’s literary community has another reason to celebrate! The Royal City Literary Arts Society has announced the 10-book longlist for the 13th Annual Fred Cogswell Award for Excellence in Poetry, shining a spotlight on contemporary poetry and the writers bringing it to readers across Canada.

The annual award puts the focus on poetry collections from a diverse range of authors, with this year’s longlist featuring works published by Canadian presses.

Among the nominated titles are Tabako on the Windowsill by Hari Alluri, Long Exposure by Stephanie Bolster, A Bow Forged from Ash by Melissa Powless Day, Myth by Terese Mason Pierre and Wellwater by Karen Solie.

The full longlist also includes collections by Vera Hadzic, Joseph Kidney, Conor Mc Donnell, Tolu Oloruntoba and Anna Veprinska, highlighting the variety of voices represented in Canadian poetry today.

The Royal City Literary Arts Society thanked Kevin Spenst, this year’s award judge, for his work and dedication to the selection process.

For New Westminster, the announcement offers an opportunity to celebrate the local literary organization helping bring poetry into the spotlight while encouraging readers to discover new Canadian writers and their work.

With 10 collections to explore, poetry fans can add some fresh reading to their shelves while celebrating the literary arts in the Royal City.
