New Westminster residents are reminded that Stage 2 water restrictions are now in effect as part of Metro Vancouver's regional water conservation plan, bringing continued limits on outdoor water use during the summer.

Under the current restrictions, lawn watering remains prohibited in New Westminster and throughout Metro Vancouver. However, residents may continue to water trees, shrubs, flowers, and gardens at any time using a hand-held hose, watering can, or drip irrigation system, helping maintain essential landscaping while conserving water.

The restrictions are intended to reduce water consumption during the region's peak summer demand and help protect Metro Vancouver's drinking water supply. Conserving water also helps ensure adequate reserves remain available for essential services, including firefighting and other community needs.

New Westminster homeowners and businesses are encouraged to follow the Stage 2 watering rules and use water efficiently throughout the summer. Residents should review the full restrictions to ensure they comply with current regulations and avoid potential fines for prohibited watering activities.

Hope continues for families searching for cats displaced by the Pinecrest Manor fire, with two cats already reunited with their owners as recovery efforts remain ongoing.

City officials say the fire site is still unstable and contains hazardous, contaminated materials, making it too dangerous for staff, emergency crews, or the public to enter. Despite these challenges, Animal Services is continuing its search through regular patrols of the surrounding area, responding to reported sightings, maintaining feeding stations, and working alongside New Westminster Fire and Rescue Service and community partners to deploy trail cameras, humane traps, and sheltered crates.

While security fencing has been installed to keep people away from the unsafe site, officials note that it does not prevent cats from coming and going. Because cats often return to places that are familiar to them, every reported sighting offers another opportunity to reunite a beloved pet with its family.

Residents who have lost a pet or spot a cat near the fire site are encouraged to contact New Westminster Animal Services at 604-519-2008. After-hours sightings can be reported to the on-site security team, who will pass the information along to Animal Services.
