New Westminster renters have a free way to beat the summer heat, but supplies are limited. The City is offering 500 free Stay Cool kits to eligible local renters on a first-come, first-served basis.

Each kit contains practical items designed to make hot days a little more manageable at home, including a cooling towel, digital thermometer, and face mister. Residents will also receive educational materials with information and tips for staying safe and comfortable when temperatures climb.

The initiative is particularly timely for renters who may have limited options for making permanent cooling upgrades to their homes.

With only 500 kits available, interested New Westminster renters are encouraged to check their eligibility and apply early before supplies run out.

The City has posted full eligibility requirements and application instructions online, along with additional information about staying safe during periods of extreme heat.

Three New Westminster police officers are being recognized for their efforts to keep distracted drivers off B.C. roads.

Constables Faris, Heath, and Wise have received Awards of Excellence in Distracted Driving Enforcement, an annual recognition presented through the B.C. Association of Chiefs of Police Traffic Safety Committee and ICBC.

Constables Faris and Wise earned gold status, awarded for issuing between 300 and 500 tickets or warnings, while Constable Heath achieved excellence status, recognizing 500 or more.

Two of the three officers are seconded to the Integrated Road Safety Unit, a multi-agency team conducting traffic enforcement in New Westminster and other Lower Mainland communities.

According to NWPD, distracted driving contributes to an average of 80 deaths and 2,424 injuries annually on B.C. roads. A first distracted-driving offence carries a $368 fine and four driver penalty points, with repeat offenders potentially facing significantly higher financial penalties.
