As summer temperatures begin to climb, New Westminster residents have plenty of options to stay cool and safe during hot weather.
The City of New Westminster has launched its seasonal heat response measures, including outdoor pools, spray parks, misting stations, and cooling resources designed to help residents beat the heat.
Residents can cool off at Moody Park Outdoor Pool, Hume Park Outdoor Pool, and Grimston Wading Pool, while five spray parks and water features are open throughout the city. The City has also installed 13 temporary misting stations in neighbourhoods across New Westminster, operating through September.
When temperatures reach 27°C or higher, designated indoor cooling centres may also be activated as part of the City's Extreme Heat Response Plan.
To help residents find nearby cooling options, the City has created a Stay Cool Map highlighting pools, spray parks, drinking fountains, shaded green spaces, and cooling centres. Officials encourage residents, especially seniors and vulnerable community members, to plan ahead and take precautions during periods of extreme heat.
Calling all artists, sketchers, painters, and creative minds! Arts New West is inviting the community to embrace the beauty of New Westminster through Plein Air in the Park, a weekly outdoor art gathering at The Gallery at Queen’s Park.
Running every Wednesday from June through August, the drop-in program encourages participants to bring their own art supplies and spend an afternoon creating outdoors alongside fellow artists. Whether you enjoy painting landscapes, sketching nature, or experimenting with new techniques, the sessions offer a relaxed and welcoming space to find inspiration in one of the city's most scenic settings.
No registration is required, making it easy for artists of all skill levels to participate. Organizers simply ask attendees to bring their own materials and, if possible, send an email in advance to help estimate attendance.
The program begins Wednesday, June 17, and runs from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
