Want to help shape the future of New Westminster? 🌟 The City is now accepting applications for its advisory groups and the Library Board of Trustees—two exciting ways to make a real impact in your community.

Advisory groups bring residents together to share ideas and perspectives on accessibility, planning, arts and culture, heritage, and more. These groups play a key role in helping shape decisions and initiatives that reflect the needs and values of our city.

Library trustees guide policy and planning, while advocating for services that spark curiosity, encourage learning, and empower residents of all ages.

This is your chance to get involved, connect with others, and help build a thriving, inclusive New Westminster.

📅 Deadlines: Library Board – October 6 | Advisory Groups – November 3

Ready to see New Westminster in a whole new way? On Saturday, September 20, from 12–1 p.m., join plant expert Julia Alards-Tomalin for a lively stroll along the New West Boardwalk. This free outdoor adventure is all about spotting the plants—both native and ornamental—that shape our urban ecosystem.

You’ll learn how to identify common species, uncover surprising details hidden in plain sight, and come away with practical tips to use on your own explorations.

Julia, who leads the Forest and Natural Areas Management program at BCIT, has a deep passion for plants and brings a mix of horticulture, arboriculture, and ecological know-how. She even helped create the free textbook Buds, Branches and Bark: A Guide to Winter ID in the Pacific Northwest!

🌦 Rain or shine, the group will set out from the Fraser River Discovery Centre at 788 Quayside Drive—so bring your curiosity, comfy shoes, and weather-ready gear. This event is open to all ages but best enjoyed by older kids and adults.

🍃 Even better, this horticulture walk is part of RiverFest 2025, New Westminster’s annual celebration of the Fraser River. Along with live music, art, and family-friendly activities, this walk adds a green twist to the festivities by connecting people to the plants that thrive along the riverfront.

⛈️ Rain Joke of the Day 🌧️

🌧️ Why did the rain apply for a job? 🧑‍🏭

It wanted to make a little “cents”! 🪙💰️
