A witness's quick call to 9-1-1 helped New Westminster police recover a stolen vehicle and seize a loaded firearm following an early morning collision on the Queensborough Bridge.

According to the New Westminster Police Department (NWPD), officers responded to a report at approximately 2 a.m. on July 25 after a caller reported seeing a truck strike a barrier on the bridge at a high rate of speed.

Responding officers located the damaged vehicle, along with its driver and passenger, in a nearby parking lot. Police determined the truck had been reported stolen and arrested both men. During a search, officers found one of the suspects in possession of a loaded firearm.

One man was released at the scene, while the second suspect was taken into custody before being released with several conditions. Police say they expect to forward recommended charges related to stolen property and firearms offences to Crown counsel.

The NWPD is thanking the witnesses whose prompt report helped officers respond quickly and remove a dangerous weapon from the community. Police continue to encourage residents to call 9-1-1 if they witness a crime in progress or believe someone's safety is at risk.
