A New Westminster city councillor is urging the provincial government to mandate clearer reporting of how much money municipal politicians earn, after compiling data that reveals some Metro Vancouver mayors received compensation well above the salary of a provincial cabinet minister.
Councillor Daniel Fontaine conducted a personal analysis of public 2024 data, drawing from multiple sources, and concluded that Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie received the highest total compensation among Metro Vancouver mayors. Brodie earned approximately $244,000 from the City of Richmond, $64,000 from Metro Vancouver, $40,000 from TransLink, $24,000 from the South Coast Transportation Authority, and $28,000 from the Municipal Finance Authority, bringing his total compensation to $397,482.
Fontaine noted that Brodie's income exceeds that of a British Columbia cabinet minister, who earns $183,000 annually, and is approaching the salary of the President of the United States.
Other Metro Vancouver mayors also received high levels of compensation in 2024. Burnaby Mayor Mike Hurley earned $377,560, Port Coquitlam Mayor Brad West earned $376,233, and Delta Mayor George Harvie earned $317,401. These figures include salaries, stipends, and reimbursed expenses from various regional and local government boards.
Fontaine is calling for the provincial government to require the consolidation of all municipal compensation into a single, accessible format for public transparency. He argues that the current system, where financial details are spread across various documents and agencies, makes it difficult for residents to understand how public funds are being allocated to elected officials.
A recent Deloitte report prepared for Metro Vancouver recommended that the province legislate a maximum compensation threshold for municipal officials, suggesting their total earnings should not exceed those of a cabinet minister. Fontaine supports this recommendation and is urging the provincial government to act on it.
He says a clear and standardized approach to reporting politician pay would enhance transparency and accountability at the municipal level.
