New Westminster is getting a summer refresh. The New Westminster Chamber of Commerce and the City of New Westminster are inviting businesses, students, and community volunteers to take part in Summer Sparkle 2026, a city-wide beautification project happening June 6.
The initiative will bring volunteers together to help brighten commercial districts across Uptown, Downtown, Sapperton, Queensborough, and the West End through storefront cleanup and basic maintenance projects designed to boost community pride and revitalize local shopping areas.
Local businesses can register to receive volunteer support at no cost, while also having the option to access discounted group rates for additional services such as window cleaning and pressure washing.
Organizers say the event is about more than beautification — it’s an opportunity for the community to connect, support local businesses, and celebrate the neighbourhood spaces where residents shop, gather, and work. Volunteers will also receive snacks courtesy of Costco Business Centre Queensborough.
Registration for both businesses and volunteers is open until May 30.

Drivers and pedestrians in Uptown New Westminster should prepare for temporary traffic disruptions this week as the City completes concrete sidewalk, curbing, asphalt, and catch basin repairs along Sixth Street between Sixth Avenue and Seventh Avenue.
Construction work is scheduled to take place May 25 to 28 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., with traffic impacts expected throughout the area during working hours.
According to Uptown New West, the alleyway located between Mean Poutine and TD will be closed while crews are on site. Single-lane alternating traffic will also be in effect along Sixth Street between Sixth Avenue and Belmont Street, which may result in delays for drivers and transit users.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and follow directions from traffic control personnel and posted no-parking signage while work is underway.
City officials say the repairs are part of ongoing infrastructure improvements aimed at maintaining safety and accessibility in the Uptown neighbourhood.
