This month, the New Westminster Police Department has redeployed officers to place a stronger focus on the Downtown neighbourhood. This move comes in direct response to both rising crime statistics and growing concerns from residents and local businesses.
🚨 What the Numbers Say:
According to April’s data, crime is on the rise downtown:
Robberies have seen a 133% increase compared to April of last year
Thefts have jumped by 117% year-over-year
Mischief-related incidents are up by 15%
In addition to these stats, the department has received a wave of letters, emails, and messages from the public calling for a more visible police presence in the area.
👮 What’s Being Done:
In response, officers are being strategically shifted to the downtown core with the goal of:
Increasing visibility and patrols
Providing support to those who live and work in the area
Taking proactive steps to deter and address criminal activity
The department is committed to working alongside the community to restore a sense of safety and calm downtown.
