Our Tin Man Needs a Name!
For the past six months, our Tin Man has been working hard as the official mascot of the New West Spotlight. He has appeared in the newsletter, welcomed new subscribers, and become a familiar face in our daily adventures around New Westminster. Just over a year ago, on June 17, 2025, New West Spotlight subscribers voted to choose our mascot. The choice was between the Tin Man and the Dapper Crow, and the Tin Man came out on top.
He made occasional appearances after that, but he did not begin his full-time job until February 13, 2026, when How Well Do You Know New West? became a daily game. Since then, he has been working hard every day—and we think it is finally time he had a real name!
We are inviting our loyal subscribers to suggest a name for him. You can also tell us why you chose that particular name, but sharing the story behind your suggestion is completely optional.
After all the suggestions have been collected, subscribers will help narrow them down to five finalists. The final name will then be chosen through a community vote in the newsletter, on Facebook and on Instagram.
Everyone who submits a name suggestion will be entered into a draw to win a Tin Man T-shirt featuring their favourite Tin Man pose.
For his birthday, I had a special T-shirt made featuring the Tin Man. My husband is one of our most loyal detectives and submits his guess in the How Well Do You Know New West? game every single day, so it seemed like the perfect gift.
He recently wore the shirt to the mall while renewing our house insurance.
When he got home, he told me that someone had looked at the Tin Man on his shirt and said:
“I know him!”
I was delighted — and honestly, a little surprised. I had no idea our Tin Man had become that recognizable around the city. That was when I realized it was time. After six months of hard work, appearances throughout the newsletter, and countless adventures around New Westminster, our Tin Man deserves more than simply being called “the Tin Man.”
He needs a real name.
And who better to help name him than the loyal New West Spotlight subscribers who have gotten to know him best?
Round One: Send Us Your Name Idea
What do you think our Tin Man should be called?
Submit your suggested name through the form below.
You will also have the option to tell us why you chose that particular name. Perhaps it has a connection to New Westminster, reminds you of something local, matches his personality, or simply feels like the perfect fit.
Sharing the story behind your suggestion is completely optional. You are also welcome to submit a name simply because you like it!
What Happens Next?
Once all the suggestions have been received, we will hold another round in the newsletter to narrow the list down to the five most popular names.
Those five finalists will then move on to the final community vote, which will be shared in the newsletter and on our Facebook and Instagram pages.
You Could Win Your Own Tin Man T-Shirt!
Everyone who submits a name suggestion will be entered into a draw to win a Tin Man T-shirt featuring their favourite Tin Man pose.
You may even find yourself walking through New Westminster one day and hearing someone say: “I know him!”

We cannot wait to see what names our subscribers suggest for New Westminster’s hardest-working Tin Man!
Think you've baked New Westminster's best pie? The New West Farmers Market is now accepting entries for its annual Pie for Pride baking competition, giving home bakers a chance to showcase their favourite recipes during New West Pride Week.
Whether it's a treasured family recipe, a seasonal fruit pie, or a colourful Pride-inspired creation, local bakers are invited to enter for a chance to be crowned New West's Best Pie of 2026. The winning baker will also receive $50 in Market Money.
Hosted in partnership with the New West Pride Society, the competition will take place on Thursday, Aug. 13, at Tipperary Park during the weekly New West Farmers Market. In addition to the contest, visitors will be able to purchase slices of pie by donation, with proceeds supporting New West Pride.
Organizers encourage bakers of all experience levels to enter and share a homemade creation with the community.
