A councillor in New Westminster is pressing the provincial government to take a stronger role in regulating vape shops, raising concerns about how quickly the industry is expanding across the region.
Daniel Fontaine argues that the current system leaves too much responsibility on municipalities, which often lack the authority to set meaningful limits on where these businesses can operate or how many can open in a given area. While local governments can issue business licences, Fontaine points out that restrictions are minimal and inconsistent from one city to the next.
He noted that this inconsistency is especially visible in the Lower Mainland, where 21 separate municipalities operate under different sets of rules. A community may choose to adopt zoning restrictions, yet the neighbouring municipality might have none, creating uneven regulation and easy opportunities for vape shops to cluster.
Fontaine is bringing the issue forward at the upcoming Union of B.C. Municipalities Convention. There, delegates will debate whether stronger oversight is needed, and if his proposal is endorsed, it will be forwarded to the provincial government for consideration. Fontaine hopes province-wide standards would ensure more consistency, reduce the rapid spread of vape shops, and help municipalities better manage retail growth
The Fraser River Discovery Centre is teaming up with the New Westminster Photography Club to host a free smartphone photography workshop on Saturday, September 20, 2025. Running from 2 to 4 p.m. at 788 Quayside Drive, the session is designed for participants aged 12 and up who want to unlock the full potential of their phone cameras.
Attendees will learn how to use light effectively, apply simple composition techniques, and gain confidence in capturing striking photos with the camera they always have on hand. The workshop will include both an instructional presentation and a guided photo walk led by experienced coaches.
The event begins at the Fraser River Discovery Centre and will take place outdoors, rain or shine, so participants are encouraged to dress appropriately for the weather.
