New Westminster is wrapping its arms around one of its most cherished residents — Second World War veteran Irvin (Irv) Radatzke, who just celebrated his 100th birthday on November 13, 2025.

Earlier this month, Irv marked Remembrance Day from his hospital bed at Royal Columbian Hospital, where he has been recovering from a fall. What could have been a quiet and lonely day instead became something unforgettable. After learning he would be spending November 11 in hospital, fellow veterans, family, caregivers, and members of the Canadian Forces rallied together to ensure he was not alone. They gathered at his bedside for the 11 a.m. moment of silence, shared stories from his years as an infantry soldier, and surprised him with an early birthday celebration.

The small hospital room became filled with warmth, gratitude, and love — a reminder of how deeply Irv has touched the New Westminster community. For decades, he has been known as a gentle, generous neighbour who supported others through difficult times and brought kindness wherever he went.

Now, as Irv enters his 100th year, the community is being invited to help give something special back.

🎄 A Community Invitation: Help Irv Receive 100 Christmas Cards

To make Irv’s Christmas extra joyful, friends and neighbours hope to gather 100 holiday cards — one for each remarkable year of his life.

Residents are invited to send a holiday note or message of appreciation to brighten his December.

📬 Send Cards To:
Irv Radatzke c/o Moe Boyle
B1–1010 St. Andrews Street
New Westminster, BC
V3M 1W3

Every card will help make his Christmas merry, bright, and filled with the love he’s shared with others for a century.

New elementary school planned for SD40 community

New Westminster families have something exciting to look forward to — a brand-new elementary school is officially in the works for our downtown neighbourhood!

At a recent event held at Fraser River Middle School (FRMS), Premier David Eby announced that the Province will be investing $65 million to build a much-needed new elementary school right beside FRMS. For many families who have watched our city grow year after year, this announcement feels like a long-awaited and very welcome step.

With construction expected to begin in fall 2026 and the doors set to open by summer 2028, this project aims to help relieve enrolment pressures and give young learners a bright, modern space to grow and thrive.

Behind the scenes, City staff have been working closely with School District 40’s project team to make sure planning for this new school is thoughtful, collaborative, and aligned with the needs of our community. As New West continues to evolve, this project marks another strong investment in the future of our city’s children.

New Westminster is growing — and so are the opportunities for our youngest residents. Exciting times ahead!
