Everyone deserves a safe place to call home — especially during the holidays. But for some older adults, the comfort and security of having a home can disappear unexpectedly, leaving them facing uncertainty at a time in life when they may need support the most.

New Westminster-based Seniors Services Society of BC (SSSBC) is hoping to change that through its annual Home for the Holidays campaign, with a fundraising goal of $80,000 to help vulnerable seniors find safe housing and access essential support services throughout the year.

Behind the campaign are real stories of older adults whose lives have been turned upside down by circumstances beyond their control.

One of them is Peter, who lost his home after his residence was demolished. Already dealing with serious health challenges, he suddenly found himself staying in a shelter while trying to find somewhere safe to live.

With help from the Society’s Housing Navigation Services and Temporary Housing Program, Peter was able to move into a fully furnished apartment while staff worked alongside him to address the challenges of finding permanent housing. Today, he has a secure place to call home and can focus on his health and well-being.

Stories like Peter’s are a reminder that senior homelessness is not always the result of personal choices. Rising housing costs, health concerns and unexpected life changes can leave older adults vulnerable.

Through the campaign, donations will help seniors navigate the housing system, access benefits and connect with community services that support their independence and stability.

There are several ways to help: make a donation, purchase a small holiday gift for a senior receiving the Society’s services, share the campaign or connect the organization with workplace giving and volunteer opportunities.

This holiday season, a simple act of generosity could help someone find more than a roof over their head — it could help restore a sense of safety, dignity and hope.

To donate online, visit the Home for the Holidays campaign or call 604-520-6621. Every contribution brings the Society closer to its $80,000 goal and helps more seniors access the support they need, during the holidays and throughout the year.
