🕵️ Meet the 21 Names in the Running!

Our Mascot has a little problem: he still doesn't have a name!

You helped us choose him over the Dapper Crow. You welcomed him into New West Spotlight. And now, it's time to give our hardworking mascot something every proper local celebrity needs: a NAME! 🤖

We asked our New West Spotlight subscribers to put their thinking caps on and send us their best ideas — and wow, did you deliver! 21 different names are now officially in the running. Some are clever. Some are quirky. Some made us laugh. And at least a few might be just right for our Mascot.

But there's a catch...

🗳️ We Need to Narrow It Down to FIVE!

This is where you come in. We've put all 21 names on one ballot, and you can choose up to FIVE favourites. Think about which names fit his personality, which ones sound like they belong in New West, and which one you'd be happy to hear us calling him for years to come!

The five names with the most votes will become our official finalists.

And then comes...

🏆 THE BIG VOTE!

Once we've got our five finalists, we'll take the naming battle to the wider New West Spotlight community. Our Facebook and Instagram followers will get their chance to vote — and together, we'll finally settle the question: What should we call our mascot?

But before the whole city gets involved, our subscribers get first dibs. After all, you were here when the Tin Man beat the Dapper Crow. Now you get to help decide which names survive the cut!

Choose wisely. The fate of our mascot's name is officially in your hands. 😄

A major underground upgrade is coming to Sapperton, strengthening a critical piece of New Westminster’s wastewater infrastructure.

Metro Vancouver is replacing a 165-metre section of the aging Sapperton Sewer along East Columbia Street between Cumberland Street and Debeck Street. Built in the 1970s, the sewer carries wastewater from New Westminster communities to the Annacis Island Wastewater Treatment Plant in Delta.

The upgrade will help keep wastewater flowing reliably while supporting public health and environmental protection as the city grows. Crews will also replace the maintenance hole at Cumberland Street and East Columbia Street.

Work is scheduled through fall 2026. Residents near the project area can expect construction activity and some noise, including from a temporary bypass pump. Metro Vancouver says the pump will be covered with sound-dampening materials.

Tips for nearby residents: Allow extra time when travelling through the area, follow construction signs and directions from traffic control personnel, and expect occasional noise during active work. Residents can also check Metro Vancouver’s project page for updates before heading through the construction zone.
