If there’s one place in New Westminster that truly lives up to its name, it’s Queen’s Park. Spanning 75 acres of lush greenery and rich history, this beloved local treasure isn’t just a park—it’s a legacy.
Established in 1859—before Vancouver was even a city and before British Columbia joined Canada- Queen’s Park is the first public park in the entire Colony of B.C. It was Colonel Richard Moody himself who first envisioned preserving this stunning hilltop forest, famously writing, “What a grand old park this whole hill would make!” Today, his vision continues to flourish in the very heart of New West.
For locals and visitors alike, Queen’s Park is the go-to spot for a mix of relaxation, recreation, and community connection. Whether you’re planning a family picnic, looking for an off-leash run with your pup, or want to catch a community art show, there’s something for everyone tucked into these beautiful grounds.
Queen’s Park is a hub of activity year-round. Sports lovers enjoy access to tennis courts, pickleball courts, basketball courts, and two full-size playing fields (just remember, you’ll need to book the fields in advance!). There’s even an arena that hosts ice hockey and lacrosse, making this a year-round athletic destination.
One of the most beloved features is the off-leash dog area—a full acre where four-legged friends can run wild. There’s also a popular spray park to keep kids cool in the summer, multiple playgrounds, and a skatepark for the more adventurous crowd.
For those seeking a more peaceful stroll, the rose garden is a favourite stop, especially in bloom. Art lovers can enjoy The Gallery at Queen’s Park, nestled within the park's beautiful greenery, and curated by the Arts Council of New Westminster. And if you get hungry while exploring, you’re in luck: the snack and drink concession has you covered.
But Queen’s Park isn’t just about fun in the sun—it’s a place that brings people together. According to Tourism New West, it’s the perfect setting for a barbecue, a quiet run through forested trails, or an afternoon on the picnic lawn. It’s a common meeting ground for families, sports teams, local artists, and dog walkers alike.
A quick heads-up for regular visitors: The Queen’s Park East artificial turf field will be undergoing a full replacement starting in June 2025, with work expected to wrap up in the fall. So plan your games accordingly, and stay tuned to city updates for booking availability.
What makes Queen’s Park truly special is the way it blends New Westminster’s past with its present. This isn’t just another city park—it’s where nature, heritage, and community all come together. From Colonel Moody’s 19th-century dream to today’s bustling activity and peaceful paths, Queen’s Park continues to be a place where generations of New West families gather, grow, and play.
Whether you’re planning your first visit or your hundredth, Queen’s Park always offers something new to discover. So grab your walking shoes, tennis racket, or picnic blanket, and come enjoy the crown jewel of New Westminster.
