Construction is now underway on the Annacis Water Main North project in New Westminster, marking the start of a major infrastructure upgrade to strengthen the region's drinking water system.

Residents may notice construction crews installing sections of a new water main along 11th Street and 13th Street over the coming weeks. The work is expected to result in temporary traffic disruptions and construction noise near active work zones as crews complete the installation.

Metro Vancouver says it is working closely with the contractor to minimize impacts on nearby residents, businesses, and motorists while ensuring the project is completed safely and efficiently. Community members are encouraged to plan ahead when travelling through the area and remain aware of changing traffic conditions.

The Annacis Water Main North project is part of Metro Vancouver's ongoing investment in essential drinking water infrastructure, helping ensure a reliable and resilient water supply for communities across the region for years to come.

A commercial truck driver escaped what could have been a far more serious outcome after jumping from his moving vehicle before it crashed in New Westminster on Monday afternoon.

According to the New Westminster Police Department (NWPD), the truck was making a permitted delivery near Holmes Street and East Columbia Street when it rolled into a wooded area. The vehicle overturned and sustained extensive damage.

Police said a metal railing pierced the driver's seat during the crash, but the driver had already exited the truck before impact, likely preventing serious injuries.

BC Emergency Health Services responded to the scene shortly after 2 p.m. One person was treated at the scene before being transported to hospital. The extent of the person's injuries has not been disclosed.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
