Motorists and transit users in New Westminster's West End should continue to expect delays this week as a section of Eighth Avenue remains closed for infrastructure upgrades.

The closure is in effect through Friday, July 31, along Eighth Avenue between 20th Street and Twelfth Street, while crews complete milling and paving as part of the City's West End Sewer Separation and Watermain Replacement Project.

During the work, the road is fully closed 24 hours a day, with vehicle detours and traffic control personnel on site to help direct traffic. TransLink's Route 128 has also been rerouted via Sixth Avenue between 20th Street and Twelfth Street.

Residents, commuters, and visitors are encouraged to allow extra travel time, follow posted signage, and use alternate routes where possible until the project segment is completed.

$1.04 Million Announced for Youth Violence Prevention in New Westminster

A major funding announcement was made at Dan’s Diner yesterday.

The Honourable Gary Anandasangaree, Minister of Public Safety, announced up to $1.04 million to support gun and gang violence prevention in New Westminster through the federal Building Safer Communities Fund.

The funding is intended to support locally designed programs that help children, youth and young adults avoid gangs and violence by addressing root causes, creating opportunities and strengthening community connections.

The event brought together Elder William Nelson, New Westminster MP Jake Sawatzky, Mayor Patrick Johnstone, Inspector Gurbir Mondair and Dan’s Legacy training program graduate Isabel Atherton.

Dan’s Legacy hosted the announcement and highlighted the importance of prevention programs that support vulnerable young people before they become involved in violence.
