Grab your mat, soak up the sunshine, and get ready to stretch! Yoga in the Park is returning to Tipperary Park on Thursday, Aug. 20, at 5:30 p.m., bringing movement, fresh air, and feel-good summer energy to the New West Farmers Market.
Presented in collaboration with Yoga at the Quay, this low-cost outdoor session welcomes all experience levels, whether you're a seasoned yogi or trying your first downward dog. The class takes place on the grassy field at the top of Queens Avenue, right next to the market.
Why stop at yoga? Arrive early to browse local vendors, grab your weekly groceries, or cool down with an iced drink. After class, stick around for a sweet treat and enjoy the lively market atmosphere.
Come with friends or fly solo—just bring your mat, find your favourite patch of grass, and turn an ordinary Thursday evening into a refreshing summer outing.
A fast-moving rescue helped 15 residents escape an apartment fire in New Westminster after police officers and firefighters rushed into the smoke-filled building on July 30.
At approximately 6 p.m., New Westminster Police Department officers working near the 800 block of Fifth Avenue noticed the nearby fire and saw several older adults leaning out of windows to escape the smoke.
Officers entered the building alongside New Westminster Fire and Rescue Service, helping 15 residents reach safety. Some residents were unable to leave on their own and had to be carried out by multiple first responders.
Two police officers were taken to hospital for smoke inhalation and have since been released.
NWPD credited the quick response and teamwork of first responders with helping residents escape the dangerous conditions. Police are continuing to assist firefighters by securing the scene while fire crews complete their work.
