An 18-year-old man has been arrested following a disturbing incident on public transit that left a 13-year-old middle school student assaulted in New Westminster.
The incident occurred on the afternoon of Wednesday, June 19, when a group of students boarded a bus along 8th Avenue around 3:30 p.m. As the 13-year-old student prepared to exit the bus a few stops later, they accidentally bumped into the 18-year-old passenger with their backpack. What followed was a violent reaction β the man allegedly grabbed the student by the throat and punched them several times.
Both the victim and the suspect exited the bus at separate stops, but the incident was promptly reported. Metro Vancouver Transit Police received numerous calls and text messages from other students who were on board at the time. Thanks to the quick response and cooperation of these young witnesses, the suspect was identified and arrested the following day.
The 18-year-old has since been released under court-imposed conditions while awaiting his next appearance. Authorities confirmed they are working in close coordination with school officials to ensure student safety on public transit moving forward.
In response to the event, the schoolβs principal informed families via email that staff were aware of the situation and had activated counselling resources to support affected students.
This summer, young soccer enthusiasts in New Westminster have an exciting opportunity to train with professional coaches at the Whitecaps FC Development Camp. Running from July 21 to 25, 2025, the camp will be held at Mercer Stadium Field and is open to boys and girls aged U8 to U14.
Structured to accommodate both beginners and more seasoned players, the camp provides a professional training environment led by certified coaches from the Whitecaps FC Academy system. Campers will participate in high-energy drills, technical exercises, and competitive games, all designed to boost their skills and passion for the sport.
The half-day sessions run from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. each day. The program is priced at $265 plus taxes and fees. In addition to expert instruction, all participants will receive an official Whitecaps FC camp t-shirt.
As a highlight of the week, campers will take part in a World Cup-style tournament β an exciting finale that promotes teamwork, friendly competition, and a celebration of the game.
This development camp also serves as a pathway for players interested in advancing through the Whitecaps FC BMO Academy system, offering further growth opportunities within the clubβs network.
